The Interpreter: A Voice That Protects Rights and Dignity

For many newcomers, the first challenge in the United States is not finding work or housing. It is being understood. Language can become an invisible wall that separates people from healthcare, justice, and education. Behind that wall, fear and confusion often take root.

A recent article from Latinos y Judíos Unidos, a free network of lawyers, mental health professionals, and essential community organizations that we’re part of, titled “El intérprete: el acceso que rompe la barrera del idioma,” captured this truth clearly. It reminds us that professional interpreters are not only translators of words but guardians of access and dignity.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Alexandra grew up surrounded by Spanish, English, Arabic, and Italian. After moving to Venezuela, Spanish became her primary language. She holds a Master's in Healthcare Administration from Washington University in St. Louis and is a California court certified and medical interpreter.

She founded Kaplan Interpreting Services after seeing an industry that treated interpreters as interchangeable and clients as ticket numbers. She built a protocol-driven operation where every interpreter is hand-selected and credentialed for the specific setting, every client has a dedicated point of contact, and risk management is built into every assignment.
